This show has given me mixed feelings so let's go over them
The story was pretty simple. When i was doing some preliminary reading, people said that it had a complex storyline, and I don't think that was the case.
I think my main issue with this show is that I didn't really fall in love with any of the characters. Now I'm not nessecarily a characters person per say, but damn everyone felt kinda flat here. I guess they all interacted in sort of a cookie cutter way, that I didn't really get an ounce of charm from them. As for those I kinda liked, Desler is funny in the dub, and I like
Shiro Sanada for being the literal anime bullshit machine himself. Domel has a few great moments too.
I watched the dub until episdoe 11 so there may have been a few things i missed.
Analyzer was kinda funny until the sexual harassment episode. The way he drinks alchohol by splashing it on himself and getting noticably drunk is one of the funniest things I've ever seen a robot do.
No for real cause why are there two episodes where Yuki being sexually harassed/assaulted is the driver of the plot? It just felt so lame.
I know this is an early 70s war anime but why are there no women on the ship besides Yuki?????? Maybe I'm just too woke for this type of show.
The ships look very cool. That's it. That's the tweet.
The concept of a ship just being chased and beating the odds is, was, and will always be very compelling. I understand why people were so inspired by this anime. It also kinda recontexualizes a lot of stuff that I've been watching lately, and I feel like i need to rewatch gundam, macross, orguss, nadesico, and every other scifi anime i've seen just to see them again with this new lens.
I feel like the Gamelans/Gamilus people were just too flat of a villain. Like okay they're taking over every damn planet in the galaxy and trying to find a new home world. If you're so goddamn advanced can't you just fix your planet? or use one of the handful of other places they ran into on the way from the solar system? Why do we gotta turn earth into another dirtball of a planet? Could you notr have just taken Iscandar too???? Make it make sense. All the planets they were taking seemed to be shitholes anyway, i feel like the Gamilus were mildly suicidal.
The "sci" fi part of the show was a little siller than what i'm used to. Not saying that anything like gundam is real, but oh man especially in the english dub the science is literally nonsensical. "mars is thousands of light years from earth" you could have just not said this? I hate being the acthually guy but I feel like if you're going to be wrong then at least be charming about it. I would have overlooked this if it was in Orguss or Dunbine or something. Orguss is proudly a shitpost tier sci fi show, and Dunbine is just rizz city with how it presents itself. Yamato is just Yamato.
The episode where the guy was talking to his parents via the communicator and had a mental breakdown over the info he was getting from them was really, really good. The dude made a whole suicide attempt in his maddness and stumbled upon the machine that had been deciving him. A happy unlikely ending, but I think it felt even more realistic with the technology we have today.
The explosions looked needlessly silly lmao. Like every explosion in this show looks like the 💥 emoji lol.
They remvoed a LOT in the dub, people really understate how much they changed. Like I'm not one of those crybabies when they change things in a localization, but it really feels like a differnt show this time. The voice acting itself in the dub is fantastic, especially if you can get by the cheesy names, but the actual writing just feels sloppier. They even changed the name of the main ship after a few episodes from the Yamato to the Argo. If you were gonna do that ya shoulda thought of that sooner bone heads! I get why they took it out, WW2 refereces and all that, but an ounce of forsight coulda went a really long way in making a better product.
Although the intro is catchy, the music soundtrack in the show is FANTASTIC. Very very very good score in this show. They abuse the hell outta that leitmotif, but hey it sounds even better each time they do it.
The show doesn't really overstay it's welcome which is indeed welcome.
Why did they make Starsha look like that?
The Yamato withstands a LOT of damage. But it's all fixed like 2 scenes later.
Yuki coming back to life randomly got on my nerves. YOU'RE DEAD.
Desler falling through the trap door was one of the biggest horse shit anime moments of all time.
Sending the goofy spinning top thing from the wave gun BACK into the gamlius fleet was one of the biggest horse shit anime moments of all time. And I think the characters realized it too lol.
They reuse a lot of animation but that's ok.
I feel like war nuts would love this show, there's a lot of time spent on just ships flying around, blowing up, and crashing into things. It's very cool to look at most of the time too. All the ships feel like they have weight and volumetricity to them.
The coloring in this show was on point. I really like how they always knew how to shade and light a scene.
Starsha's rejecting of her own fate as the last of her civilization and embracing a future with Mamoru was a nice touch. You can really see the hesitation in Susamu before he waves them both off. He really forces it, since he's missed his brother for so long, but knowing now that his brother is happy, he forces himself to see him off with a smile. It's honestly very sad, but there's a lot of closure and hope in it.
Some of the worlds are really weird, and I like that a lot. Though, an ounce more of whimsy would have gone a really long way. See the crusher joe movie to get what i mean lol... Okay maybe crusher joe has too much whimsy.
Okay the art is also really good. I love the art in this.
Doesn't this make you go on a nice little walk? Doesn't this make you want to feel everything and nothing at the same time? I love you!
She's the only woman on the ship btw. He think's he's the shit. He not even the fart... Bro got cancelled ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
Overall the show was okay. Dare I say it was good? Pretty good maybe? I know I review a lot of older shows on here, but I feel like the other shows that were inspired by Yamato were just so much more interesting than this. If you like anime or plan to watch a ton of mecha and sci fi shows like I did/am doing, then you do indeed owe it to yourself to watch it sooner rather than later. It is interesting to see where some of these concepts come from.
From what I can tell the sequal looks like it's really good, but I don't think I'm in the mood for it right now.
